Ron spent some time this week looking for a mattress for Owen's new Big Boy Bed. It turns out (according to the sales lady at Sleep Country USA) that the best deal for a twin mattress is at Costco. Since we are not members, my friend Nicole and I went at lunch. I bought her lunch out of my blow money for her trouble. We actually bought two mattresses, one for Owen's bed and one for the trundle. I also bought a bag of dried mangoes because the dried mangoes from Costco are the best food ever! The total came to $316.17 which comes out of August's budget since we already spent all of the Big Boy Bed fund.
I had to get gas before I headed out to pick up Cody. I had not brought the gas money with me so I used the debit card and it will have to come out of August's budget also. Of course, there will be more left over in the gas envelope so will all even out in the end.
When I got home with the mattresses, the one that I bought for the trundle didn't fit. It's too thick so that the drawer can't close. I called Nicole to make sure that she had the receipt for the mattresses since I didn't think that I had it. It turns out that she does so we will go back on Monday and return it.
After dinner Ron, Samantha, Owen and I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond. There we bought two pillows and a water proof mattress cover for the Big Boy Bed. I had a $25.00 gift card but ended up spending another seven-something. It will go into the August budget also. I need to get better at keeping my receipts so I know the exact amounts of these things before they hit the bank account!
We put all of the bedding on Owen's bed. It looks great. His whole room looks really cute. He and Samantha tried sleeping there last night. After awhile though they were ready to go back into Samantha's room. I figure it will take awhile for Owen to get used to his new room.

A Couple of Money Things
Just a couple of financial things...
First off, my DH went to the grocery store again without bringing our gift card. Aargh! Now we are $47.04 over in the grocery budget! Again, aargh!
The second thing is that we got a $150.00 refund from Pottery Barn Kids. Hurrah! This will go to the August budget where it is sorely needed.
One reason that the August budget is so anemic is that I have only gotten one of my paychecks. Not good. I got paid on the 22nd which is about right but instead of getting the check for my August 15th invoice, I got the check for my July 31st invoice. Hmm. The July 31st invoice was submitted late. I don't think I sent it until we got back from Butte. Still, I hope they don't think it's ok just to be two weeks behind from now on, because it's not. Perhaps I'll ask Nicole about it tomorrow.

Mama Mia!
On Sunday my mom, my sister and I went to see the movie Mama Mia! It is the musical based on the music of ABBA. It was great! Very uplifting and rah, rah middle-aged womanhood. I wouldn't recommend it to any man I know but all three of us loved it.
I had seen the live play in Las Vegas with my friend Leesa. That was good too.

Pig Roast
Pablo has family in town from New York and Puerto Rico so Saturday he held a pig roast. I know that is what is family does in Puerto Rico when they all get together. This one was at Sheri and Gary's house. They didn't actually roast the pig there. I guess there was some problems getting a spit together. Instead they had the pig roasted at Stewart Meats and then brought it over.
It was interesting to see. The pig was completely whole except for the insides. It still had its hooves, it's head including eyes, ears and teeth, its tail...everything. It was kind of a strange reddish-brown color. I was looking at the pig and wondering if I would be able to eat it or any pig again.
Pablo and his brother started hacking the pig up with machetes! First they hacked it into quarters and hacked the head off. Then they cut the meat off when knives. Somewhere along the way it stopped being a pig and turned into pork. Pork that looked good!
The pork was really good. Pablo's sisters made good rice and there was a ton of other food.
It was a really nice day. The weather was perfect and there was a pretty good crowd there. My mom and dad and Larisa and Ron were all there. Gary's family was there too and Michelle, Bill, Billy, Becky, Andy and Alex plus Ray and Denise. Friends of Debbie's from work were there too.

Cody's Birthday
Cody turned 16 on Friday! I can't believe he is so big! He didn't get his licence, he hasn't even taken drivers ed. His dad says that he needs to get good grades in order to do that and I heartily agree. He flunked two classes last year. So not acceptable and frankly, I'm glad that I'm not the one who has to deal with it on a day to day basis. I've got my hands full as it is.
For his birthday we all went to the Harbor Lights along with my mom and dad and Larisa. Pablo had family arriving from New York and Puerto Rico so he and Debbie couldn't make it. Cody loves halibut and chips and cheesecake so I thought it would be a good place to go and it was. We only paid for the six of us with our entertainment money and my dad picked up the rest. Yea!
We gave Cody a $300.00 gift card to Gamestop. My mom and dad got him $75.00 worth of Gamestop cards and Debbie and Pablo gave him $50.00. Lucky kid.
When we got home from dinner I could hear Cody rummaging around looking for something. Finally, he came and asked me if I had his gift card...the $300.00 one! I didn't have it so we called Robby at work and asked if he had it. He didn't so we called the Harbor Lights and lo and behold the bus boy had found it on the table and they had it in the office for us. Phew! Cody was certainly relieved. I had felt bad for him because he was so stressed.
We went and picked the card up on Saturday. I left a $20.00 tip for the bus boy who had found it. It would have been so easy for him to pocket it and I'm grateful that he didn't. Cody spent most of the gift cards buying the Playstation on Sunday.

Love O'My Life
Last night Ron went to the grocery store to pick up a few things. I gave him the gift card but then he couldn't find it when it was time to pay. He did find it in his pocket when he got home but he debited when he was at the store so now we are over $25.76 in the grocery fund. Grrrrr!
On a more positive marital note, he did stay home with the children today. Owen is still having tummy trouble so I took Samantha to swimming lessons and then brought her home and went to work. Ron worked from home which is not easy with two little ones. He's a good daddy! I'm not sure what we are going to do tomorrow.
Today was the last day of Samantha's swimming session. She will still be in the 1's group next session but she got some very positive and sweet comments from her teachers on her little report card. They really do a good job of teaching the kids.

Big Boy Bed Arrives!
Today Owen's Big Boy Boat Bed was delivered along with his dresser. Here is what it looks like only we got the dresser that matches the nightstand and different bedding.

Isn't it great?
We haven't gotten a mattress or pillows so he can't sleep in it yet. Still he was pretty excited when it showed up.
I went and put down the deposit for Samantha's Kindergarten so she is all set. It's nice to have that all done.
Poor Owen is having tummy trouble. His stomach hurts and he has the runs. They tried to call me from the daycare but there must have been a mix-up because they couldn't get a hold of me and ended up calling my mom and dad. Poor little guy. Of course, I gave all of the Pull-ups that I bought to the daycare so Ron is out buying more now. I don't want the little guy to have to stress out about potty training when he's not feeling well.

Fred Meyer Gift Card
I've just returned from Fred Meyer where I purchased a $300.00 gift card. They are having a deal right now if you buy a $300.00 gift card they add 10% so my gift card is really worth $330.00. I figured it was an easy way to make $30.00. There is only $9.83 left in the grocery fund for the month but then also the balance of the card.
Unfortunately, I also had to buy a package of Pull-ups while I was there. Having Owen in just big boy pants isn't working out very well. He does fine with the peeing but he poops in his pants every day. I'm going to take some to daycare and they will put them on him just from 2:00 - 4:00. That seems to be prime poop time. Then at home we'll just put them on when he has an accident and then try again the next time he goes in the potty. This is similar to what we did with Samantha though she was only two and it took about two weeks to completely potty train her. Boys are definitely more difficult.
We got a letter in the mail today saying that Samantha has been accepted into the all day Kindergarten program. Yea! However, they said that the first payment was due today and that if they didn't receive it they would assume we wanted her in the half day program. Hmm. I'm going to run by the school with a check tomorrow. The cost of the program is $2,700.00, $270 for ten months. This first payment actually counts for June. At least it's cheaper than daycare.

Sunday Spending
We did some spending yesterday. First, Ron went to G.I. Joe's and bought the kids a pool. It's pretty big! That came out of the House fund. There is $6.00 left in there. I had my color ink cartridge refilled and replaced my black one. That was $39.00 that came out of the Home Office fund. I bought a $300.00 gift card from Gamestop for Cody's birthday. He wants a Play Station 3. I guess they cost about $499.00 which was beyond my budget but I thought I would help him get started. $189.57 of it was in savings but $110.43 of it has to go into August's budget. Then I bought a card for him, a candy bar and a soda with my blow money. I've got $61.00 left for the month.
Today Samantha had her five year old check up. She came through with flying colors. She weighs 43 pounds and is 43 inches tall. She did have to get two shots but she was very brave. That was $15.00 out of the Co-Pay fund. Ron went to the grocery store today and spent $14.02 getting a few things so that we could have leftovers for dinner. We're down to $309.83 left for the month there. Eek!
Today is Elsa's birthday. She is 10 years old today. I still think of her as our puppy since Frasier is 13. They both are getting up there.
Ron talked to Bank of America today. They said that they would take the second payment that I made and apply it to next month so Ron gave me a check for $511.00. Disaster averted! Whew!

A Good Saturday
We had a really nice time with Sean and Leesa last night. They are two of my favorite people and we always have a lot of lively conversation. They always have good stories and we seem to see eye to eye on most issues. The two sides she brought were delicious. Guyere scalloped potatoes and a pasta salad. I want both recipes. Ron grilled chicken and we used Mom and Dad's marinade. Yum! I made and an antipasti platter and then we had vanilla ice cream with strawberries for dessert.
I also had a really good conversation with Robby yesterday. I'm feeling much better about the lad and I think Ron is too. Right now Robby is doing really well, going to school and working hard. I need to trust my gut and focus on my life and let him focus on his.
On a financial note, I spent $261.70 at the grocery store yesterday. Eek! That was our groceries for the week plus extra stuff for dinner last night like flowers, expensive appetizer stuff, beer and wine. Still, there is only $323.85 left in the grocery fund for this month so I'm going to have to watch it! I really want to stay within budget this month just to make sure that it is possible. I don't want to have to increase it.

A Wedding and Some Grumbles
I got an official invitation to Kaitlyn and Brian's wedding today. I'm so happy for those two. The wedding is on September 13th. I think I'll wear my black dress with the little white dots. I love that I already have something to wear! I put $100 for their wedding gift into August's budget but it may have to slide to September. August is already a little snug.
As for the grumbling, the first one is about Bank of America. That is where Ron's loan (which is in my name due to my superior credit) for the Audi is. I got a call today from them claiming that we had not made a payment on the thing yet. I didn't know anything about it because Ron takes care of that since it comes out of his car allowance. When they went to verify my address it turns out that it was wrong so that was the problem, we hadn't gotten a bill yet. Once that got fixed, they wanted to know if I could make a payment then to avoid a late fee. I said sure thinking that I Ron could write me a check from his business account today and pay us back. I made the payment and even avoided the $15.00 fee that they wanted to charge me by talking to someone's supervisor. No problem. I then emailed Ron and jokingly said that he owed me big time for saving him from a late fee. He wrote back saying that he had made a payment over the phone a few days ago. Argh! It looks like we paid twice. I don't if Ron has the money to pay me back now and I don't know if BofA will consider the extra payment August's payment so that Ron won't have to pay them next month and will be able to pay me then or if they just applied it to principle which means I might have really screwed us up. Again, aargh!
My second bit of grumbling involves the Robby and Ron saga. I talked to Robby today about some of Ron's issues, though I presented them as "our" issues. As soon as I started talking I knew that I had screwed up and should have stayed out of it. Robby did not take it well. He said that he is going to school and working a bunch and does not always have time to take care of every little thing. He also said that the only times I talk to him is when I am nagging him or saying something negative. The thing is that I agree with some of what he said. For awhile there I was making a really active effort to stay out of his life and not let him get to me. I need to get back to that. It is so easy for me to get fixated on him. I think I do so when I am anxious about other things or maybe even when I don't have much else to think about. I need to focus on the things that I am really responsible for and let him live his own life.

Good, bad, ugly...
Today was a mixed up day, some good, some bad. I didn't work today. Instead Ron and I, Samantha and Owen all took Samantha to swimming lessons. While we were there I signed Samantha up for the next session. Another $40.00 to the August budget. After swimming lessons we went out to lunch at Round Table. Ron and I split the bill out of our blow money. Then we all went to get Owen's arm checked out. They removed the cast and did an x-ray. After the doctor looked at the new x-ray she said that she didn't see any signs of a break and that she thought that he had just bruised it badly. It turns out the cast was a bit of over-treating but it really seemed to make him feel better so I don't mind. I'm glad it's off though. Tonight he took his first bath in two weeks!
The bad part of the day started after we got home and had put the kids down for naps. Ron started talking to me about how he really feels like he can't live with Robby anymore. He feels like he spends a significant amount of time each day picking up after Robby or fixing things that he has broken (he threw a chair the other day because he was frustrated with his computer and made a big hole in the wall of his bedroom). Ron said that he has even thought of moving out to get away from Robby. I can't really say that I blame Ron. Robby is extremely difficult to live with. He obviously has no respect for the house or the other people who live here. He leaves his clothes and wet towels all over the house, his room is trashed, he goes into our room and helps himself to change or gum or whatever he wants, he's lost his millionth key....the list goes on and on.
At the same time I feel frustrated with Ron because he refuses to address any of this with Robby. He says that he doesn't want to work on a relationship with Robby, that he just wants him gone. I feel like it would go a long way if he would sit down and talk to Robby about this stuff, kind of man to man. He says he can't. I feel like it really puts me in the middle.
Unfortunately, in the middle of our conversation Ron had to leave to catch a flight to Alaska. He gets home tomorrow night but it wasn't the best way to have him go.

A New High for Gas
I filled up the van today and paid $84.00 for the priviledge. That is a new high so I need to bump the gas budget up to $85.00 a week. It was $80.00. The gas was $4.38 a gallon which I feel like I've paid before so perhaps I was closer to empty than usual.
Swimming lessons were cancelled today. Apparently the boiler broke. They resume tomorrow and then will take place on Friday as a make-up.
I didn't walk today. I was beat on Tuesday night so decided to take the extra hour of sleep this morning. I'll go tomorrow.
It was a beautiful day today. Around 85 degrees. We had Rosemary salmon, corn on the cob and cubed canteloupe for dinner. Yum!

Another $7.20 for Cody's Birthday Fund
I found another $7.20 for Cody's birthday fund today. Ron forgot to get me a receipt from a gas run in Butte so I marked the amount down as $80.00. Turns out it was only $72.20. The total for Cody's fund is now $189.57. Only $110.43 to go. Since his birthday is only 10 days away I doubt I'll be able to come up with the rest of it and it will have to have to go into the August budget. It seems more and more is being squeezed in there. Yikes!
I got up and walked this morning. It's amazing that it's broad daylight at six in the morning. Also, the number of people out and about is surprising. The whole walk was nice except along Bridgeport. They really need to put some sidewalks in there!
Samantha had another great day at swimming lessons. She was weepy when I picked her up from daycare though. She said it was because they had her go into the five's class and they had to go out and play with the school aged kids and she was scared. I think she's still adjusting to the new, more active, schedule too.
Robby didn't go to school today. I'm trying not to let it make me crazy. He closed again last night and so was too tired to get up. He swears that he'll go tomorrow. We'll see.

New Summer Schedule
Samantha started swimming lessons today. She looked like such a big girl out there! Swimming lessons haven't changed a bit since I took them. Samantha really had a good time and says that she wants to take lessons all summer.
So the new plan is for me to get up at 6:00 and walk for an hour. Then at 7:00 I'll shower and get ready. Then at 8:00 I'll get the kids ready. Samantha will wear her swimsuit under her clothes. Swimming lessons are at 10:00 so we'll leave the house at about 9:30. The lesson lasts just a half an hour then Samantha will shower, wash her hair and get dressed. I will take the kids to school then and head to work.
That is pretty much how things went this morning. I did sleep in until 7:00 and skipped the walk because I was still pretty beat from yesterday. We were all ready early so I got a load of dishes done. I don't have any fixings for lunch in the house yet so I picked up a salad from Safeway on the way to work.
Friend Leesa called today. She and Sean are coming over Saturday for dinner. She's bringing sides and we're doing the meat. We have a lot of catching up to do. I'm excited. It is always a good time when we get together with them.
So the new plan is for me to get up at 6:00 and walk for an hour. Then at 7:00 I'll shower and get ready. Then at 8:00 I'll get the kids ready. Samantha will wear her swimsuit under her clothes. Owen's Dresser
Owen's dresser shipped on the first. The total for it comes to $1,119.44. We only have $1,058.71 left in the Big Boy Bed fund so the $60.73 overage will go into August's budget.
We still have to buy a mattress and pillows for the little guy so we will go over even more. They will probably go into the August budget as well.

Home from Butte....under budget!
We got home from Butte today. We had a lot of fun and came in under budget. Here is the breakdown:
Budget: $1,400.00
Gas: $225.98
Lodging: $708.10
Food and Entertainment: $400.00 (We got this out in cash before we left and actually have a little more than $50.00 leftover but I think I'll let it slip into the cash coffers for next month.)
The $65.92 that is left will go into Cody's birthday fund.

As you can see, there was quite a bit of extra spending last month. I guess it is to be expected for December. We are done spending on the bathroom remodel so that will help too.
